Many rides go through the small town of Grapeland.
The old square seems to be revitalized with new shops and
restaurants beginning to show up!
Grapeland drive thru safari , is a must. Salmon Lake park
has a full schedule of Bluegrass and Gospel music.
Of course the biggest event is the
Peanut Festival
One of the many New England style
churches.

One of the most interesting ways to learn about an area is to visit a graveyard.
You can find when it was settled and guess at the nationalities that settled the
area. You will find that many passed away at early ages and the Pilgrim
Church and graveyard are no exception to these rules.
This ride last about two hours round trip not including stops. It takes you
through Grapeland along beautiful back roads 227, 2022 to
Elkhart. From
there it makes a loop on hwy 861 back into Elkhart. You can take 287/19 back
home, repeat the route out, or change it anyway you choose!!
Pilgrim Church near Elkhart.

Some of the older graves at the
Pilgrim Church area.

Picnic tables are placed on the
property as well as large old shade
trees.

A truly unique spot to enjoy a
packed lunch!

A picture of one of the many twisties
on 861 near Elkhart.

This has to be one of my favorite
roads!
Ride East Texas
Elkhart, Pilgrim Church ride. Approx. 2 hours

There are restaurants, fuel and stores in
Grapeland and Elkhart. Past Elkhart is
Redtown with a deserted factory that
stands as a skeleton off in the distance.
A sign of once booming times that seem
to have passed Redtown by.
Caddoan Mounds, Mission Tejas S.P. To Alto/Rusk   3.5 hours No stops
Once again you head through Grapeland and take a right onto hwy 227. This is
definitely my favorite road of them all. You will encounter many twisties and
pass some of the most beautiful scenery one can imagine. Riding into the dips
that hold small creeks you will feel the temperatures drop 10 degrees.
After leaning into many curves you will reach the once thriving town of Augusta.
The plaque to the left is just one that explains what happened to the town of
New Boston (Now Augusta). The trailer across from the flagpoles has an old
stage coach behind it. The building is in remarkable condition for it's age
Just park near the flag poles and take a short 30 yd walk down the dirt
road beside the trailer home. Head down the hill into the creeks and on
to State Hwy 21                                                               Turn left and within
a mile or two is                                             Enjoy visiting the Rice family
log home, re-created mission or enjoy one of the many hiking trails.
As you head on towards Alto you will see the sign below on the left side
of the road. If you don't mind 1 mile of dirt road head on up to the
If you have it in you, hike the first mile of this trail. It
follows the river on the side of a large hill. It is a very pretty trail in this
area.
El Camino Real (The Kings Highway)
Mission Tejas State Park
Neches Bluff overlook
Mission Tejas State Park
Back down the dirt road to Hwy 21, a right turn and five miles will bring you to the
Neches River and                                           Spend a little time experiencing the land
much as it was when the Caddo Indians roamed it.
You are now an 8 mile or so drive to Alto. Fuel and restaurants are available and
should be enjoyed.
After your break ,head 20 yards down Hwy 69 towards           and you will take a left
turn at Rusk St. Follow it to the graveyard and veer left again onto Palestine Rd/ 752.
Go straight through the stop sign and follow 752 to Rusk. Enjoy this beautiful road.
Caddoan  Mounds S.H.P.
A Caddo burial mound
Be aware there is one corner that can sneak up on those that are not
paying attention.
As you near Rusk, 752 will become Main St. It will cross loop 343. Within
1/2 a mile on the left is a spot to pull over and look at the old abandoned
college site. Few will climb the many stairs to the top of the hill.
As you continue down Main you will come to the square. Take some time
and explore the area. When you are ready at the end of the square will
be Hwy 84. You will see N.Barton on the left (Which turns to 23) the road
back. If you carry on down 84 approx. 3 miles is the
a real East Texas gem that deserves a visit.
Now back to 23 Another road with long sweeping curves and fantastic
scenery. Follow approx 13 miles to 294 merge right (there are spots to
pull off and enjoy views of the Neches river) and follow the road to 225
which will be on the left. This twisty road with it's ups and downs will bring
you through Percilla (great food at Byrds) and on into Grapeland.
